The Almshouses and the Guild Chapel

You do not need a car to enjoy a short break in Stratford-upon-Avon. There are two picturesque walks from Heritage Mews taking you into the town centre. You can walk into town past Holy Trinity Church and along the riverside footpath, or along Southern Lane, past an old pedestrian chain ferry - the last of its kind in Britain. Stop off to take in the atmosphere at the celebrated Dirty Duck inn, with river views from the terrace and inside, walls of signed photographs of Royal Shakespeare Company actors, past and present. Continue along the path to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and Bancroft Gardens. Enjoy a coffee at the theatre Riverside Cafe or head up Bridge Street into town.

An alternative walk into town, taking in Stratford's varied and beautiful architecture, is along Old Town, past Hall's Croft (Shakespeare's daughter's home) and down Church Street, passing many fine half-timbered buildings, including the alms houses, Guildhall, Shakespeare's Schoolroom (open to the public) and the Garrick, Stratford's oldest inn. Next door is Harvard House, with its elaborately carved oak timbers (open to the public on special days).

Visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace and two other beautifully preserved Shakespeare Houses and Gardens in the town centre - open every day. New Place was Shakespeare's home from 1597 until he died in 1616 (the house was demolished in 1759). Follow in Shakespeare’s footsteps through an entrance on the site of the original gatehouse and explore a contemporary landscape that reveals the footprint of the Shakespeare family home. Hall's Croft, in Old Town, is the beautifully furnished Jacobean home of Shakespeare's daughter and her husband Dr John Hall. Take a City Sightseeing Bus Tour - the bus stops outside Hall’s Croft, about 3 minutes' walk from the cottage. The bus tours the town centre sights and nearby villages, including a visit to romantic Anne Hathaway's Cottage in Shottery and from mid-March to November, Mary Arden's Farm in Wilmcote, the childhood home of Shakespeare's mother. Experience a working 'Tudor' farm with costumed guides, watch falconry demonstrations and explore nature trails.

Visit Shakespeare’s grave in Holy Trinity Church, one of England’s most beautiful parish churches situated on the banks of the River Avon. You can see the spire from the cottage – just two or three minutes walk.
